Brief History :
Seal Island - Hout Bay has now become well known as the port of departure for scenic day trips to Seal island or Duiker Island, home to a colony of thousands of Cape Fur Seals. Drumbeat Charters, has been offering daily scenic cruises to Duiker Island to see the Cape Fur Seals from Hout Bay since 1989. The cruises are offered in either an open boat that holds 60 passengers or aboard their flagship vessel holding 120 passengers. Cruises vary between 40 minute trips and 1 hour trips, the latter of which return via the Kabonkelberg mountain range to see the shipwreck at Maori Bay or via the caves and cliffs of Chapman’s Peak. When boarding the Drumbeat II, enjoy a glass of wine or an ice cold beer from the vessel’s on board bar facilities. Should you prefer to take your own drinks on board, this is also permitted. The boat has ample outside and undercover areas and individual seating.
Breeding time for Cape Fur seals generally takes place in November/December but on Duiker Island you will see mainly male seals waiting to “come of age” for breeding. The Duiker island colony is not a breeding colony as the island has very rough waters with the risk of washing away the pups. Between January and March you will see the most seals with over 6000 Cape fur Seals populating the island as well as a variety of seabirds and cormorants. Enjoy watching the seals lazily rolling around on the rocks, snorting and groaning with the larger males competing aggressively for dominance & others sliding off into the cold waters with fins held high as if throwing a wave to the passing boats.
Cape Point - Cape Point has a long and colourful history, largely due to the search for a sea route to the East, instigated by Prince Henry the Navigator.
Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was the first to round the Cape Peninsula in 1488. He named it the “Cape of Storms”, for the notoriously bad weather, which can blow up quickly. A decade later, Vasco da Gama navigated the same route and sailed down the coast of Africa, successfully opening a new trading route for Europe with India and the Far East. King John II of Portugal later renamed it the “Cape of Good Hope” because of the great optimism engendered by the opening of this new sea route to India and the East.
‘The Point’ has been treated with respect by sailors since it was first sighted by Dias in 1488. By day, it was a landmark of great navigational value until the introduction of radar. By night, and in fog, it was a menace. Ships had to approach closely to obtain bearings and thereby were exposed to the dangers of Bellows Rock and Albatross Rock. And so the lighthouse was built. The original lighthouse was built in 1859 on Da Gama Peak, the summit of Cape Point, 238m above sea level. This made it very ineffective in mist which mandated the establishment of the second lighthouse at 87 meters. The newer lighthouse, built in 1914, is the most powerful on the South African coast. It emits three flashes in a group every 30 seconds and revolves. The old lighthouse still stands here and is now used as a centralized monitoring point for all the lighthouses in South Africa.
Boulder's Beach - Boulders Beach, located in Simon's Town near Cape Town, is famous for its sheltered granite coves and critically endangered African penguins. Named after the 540-million-year-old volcanic boulders that line the shore, it transformed from a quiet local swimming spot into a world-renowned penguin colony
